Car strikes Tucsonan Fixing Flat on SR79, Killing Man

DAVID L. TEIBEL - Tucson Citizen

A Tucson man was fatally struck by a car Thursday night as he changed a flat tire on state Route 79 between Oracle Junction and Florence, a Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said.
John D. Beatty, 18, had been hauling a trailer south on the highway when he stopped about 8:30 p.m. to fix a flat tire, Officer Carmen Figueroa said Friday.
As Beatty made the repair, he was struck by a southbound car driven by Laura V. Patterson, 79, of Tucson, Figueroa said.
Though Patterson's car rolled, she was not injured. A passenger in Beatty's car, Reinhol Povilaitis, 19, of Tucson also escaped injury, she said.
Figueroa could not say whether any citations were issued.
