Two 19-year-old girls remain in critical condition today after being hit by a drunken driver on the 10 Freeway while changing a flat tire, officials said.
Vickie Chen and Elaine Shin Ly, both of Rosemead, were standing in front of their Toyota Camry along the westbound 10 lanes near the Richardson Street overpass in Loma Linda when they were hit about 3:15 a.m. Saturday.

Daniel Miersma, a 23-year-old Redlands man, veered off the freeway and crashed into the back of the girls' car at about 70 mph, said California Highway Patrol Officer Hope Maxson.

Chen suffered major blunt trauma to the head and a broken left leg. Ly suffered a compound fracture to her right leg and multiple contusions.

Miersma was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and injuring someone else.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to call the CHP at (909) 383-4247.
