CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A deadly accident Tuesday morning on Interstate 85, near Graham Street, is now being reviewed by the Mecklenburg District Attorney’s office, a crash investigator said.

Arthur Bankhead, 53, died after he was struck by a car while attempting to change a flat tire on the left shoulder of the northbound lanes, Trooper Brian Huffstickler told NewsChannel 36.

A road crew had blocked the left lane with traffic cones shortly before 9 a.m., and an electronic sign flashed an arrow alerting drivers to move to the right as Bankhead attempted to change the tire on the passenger side of a pickup truck, Huffstickler, said.

It was not immediately clear why the driver of the car, Sandra Krasen, drove over the traffic cones and into Bankhead, Huffstickler said.

Krasen, 44, appeared disoriented, according to Huffstickler, and told troopers she thought another car was moving into her lane before the crash happened.

“No alcohol or any type of impairing substance is a factor,” said Huffstickler. “I don't believe that speed is a factor. Just simply inattention and not moving over when you are supposed to.”

State law requires drivers to slow down and change lanes, if possible, when approaching a roadside emergency.

Bankhead’s sister and girlfriend were nearby when the crash happened and witnessed the accident.

The driver of the pickup, a friend of Bankhead’s, had received a ride to work and was not with the vehicle when the accident happened.
