DANVILLE — A Pacheco man was killed and a Concord man was injured on Interstate 680 Friday when a vehicle hit them as they waited for a tire to get fixed, the California Highway Patrol said.

Police identified the man who was killed as 26-year-old Junior Nelson Carrera of Pacheco.

A Nissan pickup truck carrying the two men got a flat tire about 10:20 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway. They pulled to the side of the freeway north of El Pintado Road, called for help and then stood on a dirt embankment while a mechanic fixed the tire, Officer Tom Maguire said.

Meanwhile, nearby, a Chevrolet HHR collided with a heavy-duty PG&E boom truck, causing the Chevrolet driver to make a "dramatic right-hand turn" up the embankment, where the HHR struck the two men and crashed into their truck and the service truck.

The victim died at the scene. The 30-year-old Concord resident was hospitalized for moderate injuries. The Chevrolet driver was hospitalized for complaints of pain, while the mechanic and PG&E driver were uninjured.

The crashes are under investigation. But the death should remind drivers to get as far from traffic as possible in an emergency.

"Get off the freeway if you can," Maguire said. "Even if it means driving on a flat tire to the shoulder or exit."
