Pharr crash sends man to hospital

PHARR — A car rear-ended a station wagon stopped with a flat tire Tuesday afternoon, sending one man to the hospital.

The collision happened about 2 p.m. Tuesday on the westbound lane of Expressway 83 beneath the overpasses to Expressway 281, police said.

The initial investigation indicates a motorist was westbound on Expressway 83 and swerved to avoid a gray Ford Taurus station wagon partially parked in the outside lane of traffic because of a flat tire, said Lt. Guadalupe Salinas, a Pharr police spokesman. A secound westbound vehicle collided with the station wagon after the other vehicle swerved to avoid the disabled vehicle.

A man working to repair the flat tire became pinned beneath the station wagon, Salinas said. The individual suffered a broken leg and was taken to an area hospital but was expected to recover from his injuries.

Authorities diverted all three lanes of Expressway 83's westbound traffic onto the frontage road as they cleaned up the crash site. The scene was cleared by 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
