Police identify victim and drivers in I-96 accident involving parked car

by The Grand Rapids Press

IONIA COUNTY -- Chinh Nguyen, of Lansing, was the passenger killed Tuesday night in an accident on I-96, said Michigan State Police.

Police also released the names of the drivers in the accident: Nguyen's sister, Truc Nguyen, 39, of Lansing, who was treated and released from Sparrow Hospital in Lansing; and Nicholas Diorio, 30, of Portland.

Nguyen, 36, was sitting in the front seat of a parked four-door sedan when it was struck by the Ford pick-up truck driven by Diorio on I-96 near the Portland Road exit.

Nguyen was pulled from the vehicle and a state trooper began cardio-pulmonary resuscitation with the help of a motorist.

The victim was airlifted to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where she later died.

Police said Diorio was distracted while reaching for a compact disc, and his vehicle struck the car, which had been pulled to the left shoulder of the highway because of a flat tire. The car partially extended into a traffic lane, state police said.

Diorio was also treated and released form Sparrow Hospital.

Police said Truc Nguyen was driving east around 7 p.m. on the highway when her car had a flat tire. The pickup rolled several times, while the car sustained "catastrophic damage," police said.
