Tire blow-out causes wreck that kills parents, child

A tire blow-out on Interstate 84 near Howell caused a Saturday wreck that killed a Utah County couple and their a 2-year-old daughter, but spared their eldest child. The couple's 8-year-old daughter was listed in critical condition at Primary Children's Hospital late Saturday, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey. The family, from Cedar Valley, was driving west on I-84 through Box Elder County about 2:30 p.m. when the front-right tire of the Dodge pickup truck they were in blew a flat, said Tingey. The truck, which was pulling a utility trailer, veered sharply to the left, crossed the median into eastbound traffic and struck a semitrailer head-on, Tingey said. All four passengers of the pickup, who apparently were not wearing seat belts, were ejected, Tingey said. The driver, 28-year-old Nicholas Weaver, his wife, Ruth, and their daughter, Audrey were killed. The surviving daughter was taken by ambulance to Bear River Valley Hospital in Tremonton and later transported to Primary Children's Hospital, Tingey said. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.
