MIDLAND COUNTY — A stranded motorist checking on her flat tire Monday in the eastbound lane of Interstate 20 was struck by an oncoming car and killed, Department of Public Safety troopers said.

Rosa Conde-Olivas, 52, of Odessa had gotten out of her teal Thunderbird she was driving near mile marker 129 around 5:30 p.m. DPS officials said there was evidence at the scene and in the road that a rear tire had blown out.

While standing on the highway checking on her car, police said a black Pontiac driven by Miranda Frizell of Midland clipped the back of the Thunderbird and struck Conde-Olivas. Her body was thrown approximately 30 yards east of the scene. Her car was pushed into the inside lane of traffic.

Frizell’s car then crossed the highway and the south service road before coming to a stop in a nearby field, authorities said.

The 18-year-old driver was taken to Midland Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No charges had been filed as of press time.

Authorities were unsure how fast Frizell was traveling when she hit Conde-Olivas.

Law enforcement shut down the east lane of Interstate 20 and diverted traffic onto the Farm-to-Market Road 1788 exit and to the south service road for several hours as they worked to clear the accident area.
